Odetta
Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and many others were strongly influenced by the woman known as Odetta (Odetta Holmes 1930–2008), often called the Voice of the Civil Rights Movement. One of the best-known folk music artists of the Fifties and Sixties, she wove the songs of American folk together with the movement, and said the words and music captured “the fury and frustration I felt growing up” as an African American in Alabama. She sang “Oh Freedom” and “I’m On My Way” at the March on Washington in 1963.
